StanEx In the News
Since the inception of the "StanEx" project in 2012, both Exeter and Stanford publications have featured articles about our novel scientific collaboration. This page features some notable articles written by Exonian staff and proffessional writers about the course and research initiative through its various stages.

A second feature about Dr. Kim's speech at assembly in October 2013.
"Science is not about learning facts – it is fundamentally about open-ended inquiry and discovery"

"In the spring of 2013, the 12 students involved in Bio 470 produced more than 100 stable fly lines; almost 40 of those with insertions have since been mapped to specific spots in the genome. The efforts of last summer's student interns helped produce a perfected DNA extraction protocol that will be used by Exeter's Advanced Biology classes to extract DNA from 60 fly lines needing sequence data."

Dr. Kim returned to Exeter in October 2013 in order to adress the student body at assembly once more. Dr. Kim spoke broadly about the StanEx program that had merely been a vision only two years ago, and described the unique opportunity it provided for high school students to be involved in such cutting edge genetics research. He also spoke more broadly to Exonians about pursuing their aspirations and making career choices in the future, advice which we seniors especially appreciated, as it resonated so strongly with our thoughts and questions about college.

Following Dr. Kim's 2012 visit to campus, Exeter was buzzing with excitement at the prospect of a new course being formed in concert with The Seung Kim Lab at Stanford University. An article featuring opinions from students and teachers on campus that was written by staff on the Exonian, Exeter's school newspaper, was featured on the Stanford School of Medicine website A link to the article is below.

I invited Dr. Seung Kim, Exeter Class of '81, back to Exeter in February 2012 to give a speech to the student body at Assembly. Following the assembly, Dr. Kim and I met with biology teachers at Exeter and discussed with them our idea of creating a collaboration between his lab at Stanford, and the Exeter science department, that would introduce high schoolers to real-world laboratory work and encourage them to pursue research in the future. Below is a link to the article that outlines Dr. Kim's speech at assembly.
